Market Overview
Automotive
Automotive, chiefly characterized by in-dash navigation systems such as BMW’s drive and telematics safety and security services such as General Motors’ OnStar. This market has been poised on the brink of serious growth for several years, and the success of early navigation systems primarily in Japan and Europe seems to have finally spurred automakers to action; nearly 8 million GPS chips were embedded in in-dash navigation systems in 2005. In 2010, manufacturers are expected to ship close to 18 million in-dash navigation systems, creating a $12B market overall for automotive GPS . As in-dash navigation and telematics systems evolve to become part of the overall “car portal” or “e-car” with voice, video, and Web browsing capabilities, most automakers expect to ship GPS capabilities with nearly every make and model they sell by the end of this decade.
